Sarah Shelton is currently based in Newcastle and as a freelance Flute & Piccolo player is in great demand, working with the orchestras of Northern Sinfonia, Opera North, RSNO, the Hallé, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera and Northern Ballet Theatre.
This work has frequently taken Sarah on foreign tours including a residency at the Téatre del Liceu in Barcelona with Opera North and more recently a series of concerts at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam with Northern Sinfonia. She has also played in many recording sessions with the RSNO, Opera North and Northern Sinfonia.
Sarah studied at the RSAMD where amongst other prizes she was awarded the Olive Young Memorial Award which enabled her to continue her studies and gain a Masters Degree in Performance. During this time she was tutored by a number of visiting Flautists, including Wissam Boustany, William Bennett and Goran Marcusson.
Whilst at the RSAMD, Sarah formed the Harlequin Ensemble, a successful wind quintet that was supported by the Tunnell Trust and played many concerts including a series on BBC Radio Scotland.
During her final year at the RSAMD, Sarah was soloist in the Ibert Flute Concerto with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Sarah is a tutor at the Sage, Gateshead Weekend Music School for gifted young musicians and very much enjoys a varied career of performing and teaching.
